Don’t get all stressed out this Easter because the hot cross buns at the supermarket are seducing you (yep they’re sexy those buns!). You check out the veggies, squeeze the avocados for freshness, throw some grass-fed meat into your basket, reach for the coconut oil on the shelf, all the while, the bakery section is lulling you with its whispers:

“(Insert your name here) come buy me, I’m a fresh hot cross bun, straight out of the oven, soft and doughy, and spicy and soooooo delicious…you want me…”

Casanova probably could have learnt a thing or two from those spicy, sassy buns – what do you think?

Bbbbaaaarrrrrr, come Easter time for many of us, wandering the supermarket can be tough. The scent of cinnamon, clove & nutmeg is everywhere. Behind every tin of tomatoes, underneath the frozen peas, dancing on top of the avocados…the smell of hot cross buns awaits! It’s like a bad smell that won’t go away, but it’s not a bad smell at all, it’s completely intoxicating!!!!

Now let me tell you, even a seasoned Paleo Pro like myself, is not immune to the seductive appeal of those hot cross buns, and I’m a firm believer in never letting myself go without, so…

I came up with a solution. I created my own Paleo friendly version of Hot Cross Buns (recipe below).

Yep this girl wised up. I twirled one too many twirls with ye’ ol’ supermarket Hot Cross Bun Casanova, I grew wise to his dangerous, seductive ways and I ditched him for good…I don’t even care that he can make his scent dance upon avocados

While I still think he tastes good, my body really doesn’t think much of him at all. And it’s no wonder. Have you actually read the ingredients of those supermarket hot cross buns? Just check them out (these are Woolworths Hot Cross Buns):

I’m just curious:

  • What is spice wheat gluten?
  • Why do I need sulphites and soybean in my buns?
  • Does it make them perkier?

If so, maybe these should be sold in the gym!

Anyway, if you want to have your hot cross buns, and eat them too, and still feel good I might add, ditch the supermarket ones and make these!

PALEO HOT CROSS BUNS

These Paleo Hot Cross Buns actually contain real spices like cinnamon & nutmeg, instead of spice wheat gluten. Now that’s exciting isn’t it?

But the excitement doesn’t stop there! Fresh out of the oven, these buns actually taste like the real deal! Sure, they’re not as doughy as regular hot cross buns, but that’s completely unavoidable when Paleo baking. No gluten = much less doughiness, that’s just the way it is guys.

They’ve still got that delicious, glossy glaze and they still make you close your eyes in ecstasy when you sink your teeth into them. Even better, through on some slabs of butter and let it ooze down your chin as you feast away.

This Paleo Hot Cross Buns recipe uses Rumbles Paleo Choc Rocks (yep, we be making choc chip hot cross buns), which you can order from herepaleo chocolate

But if you don’t happen to have our 70% dark, dairy-free natural chocolate on hand, use a super good quality dark chocolate instead. I will warn you though, it won’t taste nearly as good, but it’ll do the job! (pssssss if you scroll down further you’ll see how you can get a FREE pack of our choc rocks for a limited time this Easter!)

You could also choose to leave the chocolate out, totally up to you. This is your hot cross bun love affair, find your favourite hot cross bun position and proceed!

PALEO HOT CROSS BUNS RECIPE

You’ll need 10-12, 1/2 cup capacity muffin trays to make this recipe.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/2 cups (160g) almond meal
  • 1 1/2 cups (200g) arrowroot flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3 tsp mixed spice
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 cup sultanas or raisins
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup melted butter or olive oil
  • 1/4-1/3 cup honey, maple or rice malt syrup (approx. 190-120g) depending on how sweet you like things
  • 130g Rumbles Choc Rocks or alternate high quality dark chocolate
  • GLAZE INGREDIENTS
  • 1 TAB honey
  • 1 TAB water
  • 1/2 tsp mixed spice

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 160°C/320°F and line your muffin tray with patty cases.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the almond meal, arrowroot, baking powder and spices. Then whisk through the dried fruit.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, melted butter or oil and sweetener.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk until fully combines.
  5. Stir through 100g of chocolate (you may wish to chop the chocolate into smaller pieces prior, depends how chunky you like your choc chunks!)
  6. Spoon mixture into patty cases. Fill approximately 3/4 full.
  7. Bake in the oven for approximately 25 minutes. Buns are cooked when a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Buns should feel firm to the touch when lightly pressed in the centre.
  8. In a small bowl, mix together the glaze ingredients and microwave for 20 seconds.
  9. While buns are still warm, brush on the glaze. Then let buns cool completely.
  10. Melt extra chocolate in the microwave (do this in thirty second bursts, stirring in-between each burst, you don’t want to burn your chocolate)
  11. Pour chocolate into a piping bag and pipe on your chocolate cross of deliciousness!
